Nature is not so kind enough to many who lost their fight with new kind of virus which is hitherto an unseen enemy. Many businesses could not understand how to react to the environment. No business escaped facing pathetic situations in terms of revenues, employee welfare, business sustainability etc. Lot of demand supply mismatches, logistic issues, employee health and engagement issues, financial burden due to higher health costs, psychological issues etc. Dairy Industry is the worst affected especially in the co-operative sector. During the pandemic, unorganised sector which was ruling major chunk of volumes through middlemen,, shied away and private sector dairies conveniently escaped with lame excuses. Cooperative Dairies, pan India, stood by the farmers and accepted the surplus milk to save the livelihood of crores of dairy farmers and their animals without even thinking of commercial aspect when the demand tumbled due to lockdown situations prevailed in the country. Cooperatives proudly stand up in any crisis and even today, Cooperative dairies are only business segment that contribute appx 75% of their revenue as raw material cost to famers and no other industry on earth can do this consistently. Cooperatives have unblemished track record in paying 75% of their turnover to farmers towards supply of rawmaterial there by supporting rurual economy.. The entire cooperative system proved its commitment to the welfare of the small and marginal farmers which was hitherto unnoticed or lack of chance to echo it. Almost all dairies lost money in handling the surplus milk during the covid time, by converting to Milk Powder and Butter and storing the same at high inventory cost. Central Governemnt considering the plight of small and marginal farming community in India shall support cooperative sector by giving income tax exemptions, withdrawal of GST on Milk and Milk products levied recently, GST waiver on milking machines, Dairy Plant and Machinery, Packing material etc and Service tax exemptions on all services connected with dairying that should help the poor farming community. across the continents without much exception.
